A good working knowledge of PLC control technology is essential for any engineer or technician working in the area of machine automation.

This course will give the learner the key knowledge and skills required to understand the building blocks of an automation system, how machine control is achieved and to be able to build and programme simple automation sequences.

The course is delivered over five online sessions (3 hrs each) midweek supplemented by four Practical Labs (6 hrs each) on a Saturday.

If you want to upskill and develop electrical knowledge to help you to pursue a career in a manufacturing production environment or if you are an industrial maintenance professional who would like to increase their electrical troubleshooting skills, then this course is right for you.
*You do not need to be formally qualified as an electrician to take this course.

This course will cover the following:

  1. Safety standards related to automation systems.
  2. Boolean Logic and how it applies to PLCs
  3. The PLC is and its role in modern automation systems
  4. PLC input and output wiring
  5. PLC programming Languages available
  6. Proximity and Contact sensors used in automation systems
  7. How to write simple PLC programmes given an outline criterion
  8. Diagnose and repair of faults in PLC controlled automation systems

The skills obtained can be applied in both manufacturing and service industries.

Approximately 60% of the course is supported by problem-based scenarios using custom designed PLC Automation rigs which simulate industry control environments.

The theory element of this course (Tuesday evenings) will be taken Live-Online and practical side will be taken at the College on Saturdays where you will work in a real world setting while using electrical rigs.

The ability to diagnose electrical system faults will save time and money and effective troubleshooters add great value to the organisation they work for. Taking this course and receiving the qualification will mean that you have demonstrated your competence as required by Health and Safety legislation. This qualification will present you with opportunities to work in diverse areas within the manufacturing environment carrying out the diagnosing and repair/replacement of components.

Dr Anesu Nyabadza

Dr. Anesu Nyabadza is a lecturer in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at City Colleges, specifically in the Engineering in Semiconductor Manufacturing Operations program. He holds a PhD in nanotechnology and material science, which he completed in 2021 at Dublin City University and The University of Sheffield. Prior to that, he obtained his Bachelor’s Honors degree in 2019 from Dublin City University.

Dr. Nyabadza has expertise in the production of various nanomaterials, such as graphene and bimetallic nanoparticles, using laser techniques and wet-chemistry methods. In addition to his research work, he is an experienced lecturer, teaching modules in mechanical and electrical engineering. His teaching areas cover a range of subjects, including automation and robotics, thermodynamics, product design, mathematics, and electronics.

Currently, Dr. Nyabadza’s research focus is on the life-cycle assessment (LCA) of additively manufactured Ni-Ti heat pumps, produced through selective laser melting (SLM). The primary objective of his research is to reduce the environmental impacts associated with the production and usage of these products. By doing so, he aims to contribute to the development of greener heating and cooling applications and a more environmentally friendly society.
